Synopsis via Goodreads:
Rose Zarelli, self-proclaimed word geek and angry girl, has some CONFESSIONS to make...
#1: I'm livid all the time. Why? My dad died. My mom barely talks. My brother abandoned us. I think I'm allowed to be irate, don't you?

#2: I make people furious regularly. Want an example? I kissed Jamie Forta, a badass guy who "might" be dating a cheerleader. She is now enraged and out for blood. Mine.
#3: High school might as well be Mars. My best friend has been replaced by an alien, and I see red all the time. (Mars is red and "seeing red" means being angry-get it?)
Here are some other vocab words that describe my life: Inadequate. Insufferable. Intolerable.
(Don't know what they mean? Look them up yourself.) (Sorry. That was rude.)

~My Review~

The synopsis alone had me thinking this book was going to be a good read. And it sure was, in some ways. I liked how at the beginning of each chapter there's emphasis on a word and its definition reflecting some part of the main character's life. Aside from the humor aspect, there are not so funny segments that add to the greatest of the novel: a family coping with the loss of a parent and the emotional distance of another, and a young girl coming into her own.

Call me old fashioned...

I may be raised differently, but at 14 or 15 years old going all the way with a guy was never on my mind. So, I could relate with Rose not being interested in partaking in that and other things. At that age I was focused on having fun with my friends and improving my art, which leads me to another thing I liked about the book.

Rosie's crush, Jamie, is a budding artist. That made me like his character a bit, but his girlfriend is a total biatch. Anyways, with these two to the left, I'd like to divert my attention to Robert. I didn't like the fact that he smoked but his character appealed to be so for some reason I rooted for him to end up with Rosie.
Poor family dynamics...

Something else I noticed about this book is all the kids seem to be from complicated families. Its like none of the characters came from a stable family structure. It's not unrealistic but it would've been nice to have at least one in the book because that made the story a bit more depressing.

To be honest, Confessions of an Angry Girl was interesting but it sort of bored me in some areas. Rosie's character I liked, at times I was mad at her for taking out her frustrations on people around her, but I got that she's just trying to deal. Overall, the book was good. I didn't think I could like a story where the main character was fourteen but the plot was good.

Oh, wow, that actually kind of makes me a little sad. I was actually going to give this book a chance until I saw that because I am not to keen on reading books where the protagonist is so young especially when they behave like brats which is sort of ironic because at that age I wasn't that happy and peachy. I just feel like there should be some sort of a balance between realism and likability. Anywho, I can't judge because I haven't read the book. I am actually a little more interested in reading it now. I think I talked myself into reading this book. XD

  2. I'm not overly keen on reading YA books with younger protagonists than I am used to, but this one sounds pretty good. It's a shame it didn't blow you away, but I'm glad you mostly liked it. Great review, Shane! :)

  3. I have a copy of this book too. I was a little wary to request it, but I do love the cover. It's a pity that you didn't really love the book. :/
I don't like when books bore me either. Still, great review, Shane. :)

  4. I am glad that I read your review. I was going back and forth on whether to read it or not. (So glad that I am auto approved by Harlequin on NetGalley so I can decide if I want to read a book and not wait to be approved for it)I think I am going to skip this one since I have so many other books that seem more appealing. Great review!!

  6. I was wondering about this myself and now I think I will pass, not that sounds bad or anything. I am just not up for a big dramatic book with such a young protagonist. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis, Shane!

  7. Wonderful, honest review, Shane. I have been toying with requesting this one. It sounds like a good read but maybe one that I should pick up when I have more time and there aren't other books screaming at me. ;0)

  8. Great review, Shane! I'm not sure if this is for me when I saw it on NG it made it seem very angsty and from your review I'm glad I went with my gut.

  9. Thanks ya'll for the awesome comments. I was a bit disappointed because i loved the cover but then again, we shouldn't judge a book by its cover and interesting synopsis. Just look at Monument 13, I wasn't impressed at all.

  10. Thanks for the review! I've actually really wanted it but after reading you're review I'll probably just wait for it at my library or something. I don't know how I would feel about Rosie taking out her anger on everybody around her.

  12. Great review Shane! I'm actually a little bit disappointed, the cover is so cute but as you said never to judge a book by it's cover ;) Thanks for the honest review. Happy Reading!
