I usually don't read novellas because I like a fully fleshed out story with characters that develop overtime. However, I really enjoyed this short and eerie story. Laurie Treacy is a fantastic writer and someone who has helped me greatly on my journey (no bias). The only thing is I wish that this story was longer, as I'd like to learn more about the characters, especially Adrian. That ending did a number on me and now I want more!

Cat was an interesting one. Aside from the fact that she's a ghost hunter, she had no recollection of who she was or where she came from, and I was intrigued and wanted to go along with her on this journey to find out what had happened. I liked the twists. I never warmed up to her boyfriend from the beginning and just had a suspicion about him, so I wasn't too surprised of his position. However, the fact that Cat and Adrian were more connected than she thought gave me chills. 

Like I said, it's a short story, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The writing is awesome; so fast-paced and lucid. And the overall plot is engrossing. I highly recommend giving this one a read, but not at night, as one could be terrified of the ghostly activities that takes place.

King of Ash and Bone was an interesting read for me. At first I was a little confused by what was happening, but then once the story started to progress I began to understand the situation and who the invaders were. 

I can't go into detail without revealing too much, but I can say it was tough, at least for me, to draw a conclusion as to what the dying realm should do. I mean, yes it was sad that their survival depended on claiming others, but it's not like they can decide to just fade away and not try to save themselves. Sure they were villains among them and I can't wait to see how things work out as the series develops, but otherwise, the creatures of the dying realm made sense. 

Now let's discuss characters. Mackenzie came off as a very strong and determined young girl. She had lost so much but still risked her life to save Hunter, who was a complete stranger, and I applaud her for that, especially with what was going on around her. She's the kind of heroine that we don't see often in books and that alone is a plus for this story. As for Hunter, he was a mystery at start. His character was laced with intrigue and I wanted so desperately to find out his story. I'd suspected he was one of the creatures before that came to light and without even reading the synopsis, but there was still something about him that drew me in. I liked the revelations about himself and his realm when he came clean to Mackenzie. It was evident that he was one of them but I had no idea his position ran deeper. 

The biggest twist for me was towards the end with Mackenzie. For a second there I was about to curse up a storm because I honestly thought this was it for her. Thankfully it worked out better and she was reunited with Hunter. It still gave me quite the panic though.

As for the overall story and setting, I could definitely envision everything that was taking place. The writing was clear and quick. Every scene painted a picture and I felt like I was a part of this frightening, urban fantasy world. It's a fascinating story that readers with an open-mind can enjoy. The only issue I had was the bit of confusion at the start and I think that the ending could have been stronger, even if the story will continue. Still, it was enjoyable for the most part.

I've worked with Melissa before and been wanting to read her books but never got the chance to set something aside. This is my first taste into how good of a storyteller she is and it certainly won't be the last.

It's kind of hard for me to write this review because on one hand, I liked the story, and then on the next, it sort of went away from me from the middle onward. I don't know, probably because everything started to slow down--the pace, the action--and then I felt myself getting annoyed by Ivy and some of the things she'd think and say. I mean, it was a good story, it had a great plot. The twists based on several aspects in history was something I hadn't read before, so I give it points for that. It's just that, I feel like after the middle it started to drag a bit and stress on things that were already established in the beginning. Like, Ivy kept repeating certain things and I felt like it was done to add a few extra pages when the story could have just kept rolling. 

I guess you can say I'm still iffy about my feelings in regards to her character. In the first few chapters, I liked her sense of humor and snarky remarks, but then it just started to fizzle for me and at one point her comments made me cringe. Not saying she's a terrible main character, only that certain things about her didn't work for me. 

As for Adrian. I liked him. I liked his seriousness and the way he made it clear right off that he was not good for her and that he could betray her. He was a straight to the core guy, even though he left a good chunk of details as mystery for the story to remain interesting. It can definitely be hair-pulling, how he along with Zach kept things from Ivy, but I guess it was worth it because towards the end we get to really see just how impulsive she can be when she goes and pulls off something so dangerous. However, it did get the story going again and I kind of liked how finding the weapon turned out to be for her. But then it gets messy again when Ivy is back to being mad at Adrian for reasons that baffled me. Well, I guess that's the kind of relationship they'll have throughout the series. It looks like it. 

This was my first taste of Jeaniene Frost and from what I've heard about her other books, I kind of expected so much more... like fireworks. It didn't happen for me but I did like her easy and fluid writing style, and even though it slowed down in some segments, I did like the pace for the most part. And, once again, I enjoyed the twists and play on historical elements. That aspect to me was different. Will I continue the series? Maybe, and probably with the hopes that certain things about Ivy are improved on.

Honestly, I don't know where to begin my review, probably because I have so many mixed emotions about the book. The main thing is that for a vampire story, I expected a lot more vampiric action. The first half dragged a bit, focusing on raging desire instead of establishing why this was a fantasy book to begin with. The story had so much potential to be great, but sadly it didn't give me the fireworks...oh, I should add there was plenty going on between the sheets of the main characters so if you're sensitive to intimacy on overload then you might want to pass on this one. 

There were good points to Awakened, like Sera's roommate Kathleen, and Liam's friends Mike and Jack. I felt like I didn't get to develop a connection with Doug, Danielle, or David: the 3 Ds. As for Sera and Liam, I'm iffy. While I did like them in the beginning chapters, I got put off the more I read. There were times I was utterly annoyed by Sera and felt she should relax some of her dramatic reactions. Where Liam's concerned, I would think he was crazy just like Kathleen with the way he acted. I can understand the whole soulmate thing and having an intense need to protect and mark the one you love, but wow, he freaked me out...a lot.

The story wasn't bad.I liked the writing, and yes, even how descriptive the heated scenes were, I just wish it could have been more fantasy aspect from start, and I wish I could have connected more with Sera and Liam. Even their romance didn't pull me in. It's suppose to be instant in their case, but it just couldn't convince me. Still, I'd like to give the series a chance, with the hopes it'll improve on the intrigue and get me hooked.

This was an interesting read. In fact, I enjoyed the story quite a bit. Mercy Cruz is a single mother trying to make her job as a private investigator and raising her daughter work. Not to mention she has her daughter's growing gift to deal with as well. After all, Mercy knows all too well the importance of concealing something different outsiders wouldn't understand. 

The story is focused on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Mercy's friend, and her uncovering the magical elements involved in the investigation. There's also reference to the protagonist's love life and her not dating much. When her ex and father of her daughter, Terra, comes into the story, you get a sense why it would be hard to trust again. I certainly didn't like his character, and regardless if he just couldn't understand Mercy's need for secrecy, that didn't give him an excuse to be such a jerk at times, especially when it came to their child.

Aside from the dating issues and being pursued by officer Patterson, other factors of the story included Mercy's powerful aunt feeling regretful that her niece isn't as strong as she'd like her to be, and the appearance of a warlock that brings troubles in Mercy's life towards the end.

Like I said, the story is interesting and I would like to continue Mercy's journey and what she'll investigate next. However, the pace could have been slowed down a tad to give us more development. I felt like everything went by too quick and had there been somewhat of a break down in some parts it would've made the story much more stronger. I still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy, mystery, and diversity in stories.

Ingrid Paulson lives in San Francisco with her husband and daughter and enjoys long-distance running, eavesdropping, and watching science documentaries. 

She has always loved books and writing short stories, but was surprised one day to discover the story she was working on wasn't so short any more. VALKYRIE RISING is Ingrid's first novel.
