Things I’ll Miss/Things I Won’t Miss
Like a lot of people, I was devastated when I heard that Nora Ephron passed away last month. I’d been a fan of hers for as long as I could remember, reciting words that she’d written from my favorite movies ever since I was a little girl. She once wrote an essay listing the things she would and wouldn’t miss after she was gone. At the risk of copying one of my very favorite writers, I couldn’t help but make my own list after I read hers.
Here – in no particular order – are a few of the things I will and will not miss about life here on earth. There’s so much more than this, of course – my rough drafts were a whole lot longer than what made it into the lists below – but I tried to keep it to ten things on each list. (Though it turned out it was plain impossible to keep the list of what I will miss that short!)
What I Won’t Miss:
1. That look my dog gives me when I’m leaving him home alone. 2. Airport bathrooms.
3. Feeling homesick.
4. Humid days in New York City. (It’s about 100 degrees outside today!)
5. Games people play on their cellphones.
6. Paper cuts.
7. Bigotry.
8. Hearing dogs bark when they’re unhappy or scared.
9. Eating disorders.
10. That moment about halfway through writing a book when I’ve given up all hope and there’s no end in sight and I’m certain no one will ever want to read anything I’ve written.
What I Will Miss:
1. That moment when I’m starting a new book when I feel like all things are possible and this could be the best thing I’ve ever written! 2. The last scene in Field of Dreams.
3. Fairy tales, including Pride and Prejudice and The Lord of the Rings.
4. Bookstores.
5. Thanksgiving.
6. Christmas-time in New York City.
7. Reading in bed, watching TV in bed, climbing into bed at the end of the day.
8. Reading books by Ernest Hemingway, Alice Hoffman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Joan Didion.
9. Trying new restaurants with my husband.
10. Fireworks.
11. The Big Bang Theory and The Vampire Diaries and watching re-runs of The West Wing.
12. Coming home to my dog and my husband.
