Top Five Time Travel Kisses

I am a time travel junky. Though, to be honest, I’m mostly in it for the romance. There’s something so epic about a love that spans different lifetimes. Some of my favorite fictional couples are time travelers – forced to search for one another across time and space, not letting anything (even the laws of the universe) get in the way of their love.

Because of this, I – of course – have a list of my favorite time travel inspired kisses. These are my top five:

1. Simon & Alisha, MISFITS – season 2, episode 3

GAH. THESE TWO. This series just blew me away with its time travel storyline. Having one of the geekiest characters come back from the future as a totally hot badass was such a brilliant idea. It all came to a head in the 3rd episode, when Alisha and Future Simon kiss for the first time. So crazy romantic.

2. Claire & Jamie, OUTLANDER

I first read the Outlander series in high school and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. It’s tough to pick the best Jamie and Claire kiss – there are so many amazing ones! – but I’d have to go with the moment after Claire decides to stay in the past and finds Jamie sleeping in the cabin, heartbroken and missing her.

3. Kim Boong-Do & Choi Hee-Jin, QUEEN IN-HYUN’S MAN

Anyone who follows me on twitter knows how much I love Kdrama (or Korean soap operas), and Queen In-Hyun’s Man, about a scholar from the Joseon era who falls in love with a modern actress, is my absolute favorite. These two have so much chemistry they ended up dating in real life. Kdrama can sometimes be a little chaste, but not this one.

4. Clare & Henry, THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE

Let’s get one thing straight – I vastly prefer the book to the movie version. But I’m still choosing the movie’s final kiss, just because it has an epic quality that none of the kisses in the book have. Not that the book kisses aren’t great – they’re realistic and honest and a great representation of a couple who truly loves each other. But sometimes you just need a giant run-to-each-other-in-the-middle-of-a-field kiss.

5. Rose & The Tenth Doctor, DOCTOR WHO

I only recently got into Doctor Who, but WHOA man am I ‘shipping Rose and the Doctor hard. I know, I know, this kiss is not quite what we want – a half-human Doctor instead of the real thing – but it’s good enough for me.

Bonus kiss scene:
It’s tacky to include your own characters on a favorite list, but I thought I’d share one of my time travel kissing scenes with all of you anyway! Here’s a scene from This Strange and Familiar Place, where Wes and Lydia have traveled back to 1989 together:

Soon we are in the subway tunnel, walking back toward the station. We reach the complicated point where the subway tracks cross in a mess of rails. I watch Wes again, copying where he steps. I’ve almost reached him when my foot catches on an exposed rock and I begin to fall. I raise my hands instinctually. I’m about to smash into one of the tracks, when I feel myself come up against something hard. Wes’s arms close around my body and he pulls me to the side of the tunnel, pressing my back to the rough wall.

I wonder why he doesn’t let go, until I feel the walls start to shake. There’s a low grating noise that gets louder and louder, accompanied every now and then by a long screech. Suddenly a white light is facing us, coming closer. A warm wind picks up and then the train is on top of us, speeding past, faster than I could have imagined, loud and bright and so close that I could touch it if I reached out.

Wes tightens his hold on me. I feel one of his hands on the back of my head, pulling me into his chest. Both of my arms are around his waist, my hands resting on his cotton blazer. He shifts and his fingers weave through my hair, tugging on it gently until my head is tilted all the way back. His face is distorted in the flashing light of the train, but I can see his eyes—so black they look like liquid. He leans in. I keep my eyes open, locked on his, closer and closer. He hesitates for a second, only an inch or two away. I can feel his fingers hard against the back of my head, and I bite my bottom lip. His gaze drops down at the movement, and then his mouth is on mine.

I squeeze his jacket tight in my hands and press closer to him. He deepens the kiss, and I feel his tongue touch mine. His hand frames the side of my face, fingers lightly stroking my cheek, and I can’t help but sigh against his lips.

We kiss as the train rushes by: the screaming noise, the interior lights of the cars, the passengers standing against the doors, holding newspapers and wishing they were already home. We kiss as sparks kick up when the train turns the corner, yellow spots of light that die out before they can even reach the ground.

It feels like both a second and a hundred years. We finally come up for air, both gasping a little, and I realize that the subway tunnel is dark and quiet again. Wes must realize it too, because he pulls away. I stare up at him, not sure if my ears are ringing from the passing train, or from the feeling of being pressed against him.

I was afraid I had forgotten what it felt like to be kissed by Wes—the soft pressure of his lips, the low sound he makes in his throat. But as soon as his mouth touched mine, it all came flooding back.

  3. Honestly, I'd like to go everywhere, but realistically if I could mess with time, I'd go back to the 90s and fix mistakes I made.

  4. Oh gee... I have no clue to be honest. I would love to go everywhere like Chanpreet said - history is sometimes better to experience in reality! Except for maybe the Depression. Or a guy during a war period. Yeah, that would be me. :D
