Guest Post: Maggie Harper, on losing her memory among other things

Hi Everyone! My name is Maggie Harper and I’m so glad to be visiting Itching for Books!

I’m here to spread the word about the fallibility of memories. It’s a very real problem today—or soon will be—but it’s not something people talk about enough. In fact, many people aren’t even aware of the problem.

Let me explain. I had a traumatic experience some time back. It’s taken a while, but I’m ready to talk about it, now, and I think you could all learn something from it.

About a year ago, my brother and I were vacationing together in Vegas. We stopped at a little bar off the strip for a quick drink before dinner. The next thing we knew, we were waking up in a stranger’s hotel room with no memory of what had happened to us! We lost twelve hours of our lives.

But that wasn’t the worst thing! You’d think it would be, wouldn’t you? Just before we blacked out, I saw a strange man with peculiar eyes. They were amber, flecked with color. He seemed upset and grabbed my arm. He creeped me out a little bit, but that was all. I got away from him and hurried on my way.

Here’s the thing, though. What I thought I remembered wasn’t what actually happened. I didn’t just lose twelve hours. I lost more than a year. And the amber-eyed man I thought I saw? I didn’t actually meet him until after I blacked out in the bar. For some reason, I just remember it backwards.

Memories are complex things. They’re intensely personal, like rivers of identity that seep into the pores of our souls. And sometimes, our worst memories are the most important ones we have.

Don’t ever trust your memories. They may deceive you. Or they may set you free. I just want to spread the news that, in the very near future, even a person’s memories may not be trustworthy. For my whole story, see Persistence of Vision, Book 1 of Interchron.
