Review & Blackout Poetry: Vicious by V.E. Schwab ~ #FearlessWomen

Series: The Villains #1
Re-elease Date: May 29th 2018
Publisher: Tor Teens
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn't automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

*Publisher provided the ebook via Netgalley for the tour. My review is honest and without bias.

REVIEW

Vicious has great writing and a very interesting concept in regards to the whole extraordinary abilities and the type of person you come back as after the transition. I was undoubtedly intrigued from start to finish and am looking forward to the second book since a certain person wasn't dealt with in the way I would have liked.

Getting into main characters and how I feel about them. Victor and Eli both had savage ways, in my opinion. Eli, of course, was the bigger monster, weaponizing his beliefs and using God as justification to be judge and jury over other extraordinary individuals. If he felt that deeply about it then he should have started with himself. Even writing about him irks me. And it wasn't even like he was this great person in the beginning. Eli always came off as self-righteous and conceited. And the things Victor had detected in his personality from the moment they became roommates and friends, developed immensely when Eli became EO and started on a mission to kill the others.

Speaking of Victor, he had some shady ways about him too. I think these guys crossed paths because both had something inside similar to the other. Victor also had a messed up head. He had jealous ways and definitely wanted to become EO because Eli had achieved that. And I feel that a lot of the hurt and betrayal he felt went back to a certain girl between them and how the whole thing played out after Eli turned him in. But in spite of being vicious at times, Victor still had better control of himself and in the end, he was nothing like Eli. Yes, Sydney's character became more interesting to him once he'd realized her abilities. But that changed quickly and even though he didn't show it much, it was obvious he cared for the girl. She was like family, just like Mitch and how they connected. But in Eli's case, he cared for no one. I doubt he ever truly considered Victor as a friend. The only reason he kept Serena around was due to the fact that he was unable to tear himself from her, and her ability helped his horrible mission. In the end, she definitely deserved what she got, but like I mentioned before, Eli's fall wasn't as satisfying as I would have liked.

So for my final thoughts: a very intriguing story with a few supernatural and scientific moments here and there. Characters weren't perfect. There wasn't a clear hero and no one was without complications. And although I did appreciate all the details involving the background for each character and the frequent back and forth between past and present, the overflow made me feel a tad overwhelmed and the switch could get confusing if you're not staying sharp. However, I knew I had to just look past those issues and understand that they were necessary to the story in order to better understand these individuals: who they were before all this and why they were like that now. Plus, the concept of EOs and how they came to have their abilities was the most interesting part and not really like anything you've seen in movies or read about more. That was unique in a sense and rather refreshing. It left me wanting to learn more, so I am curious as to what happens next after that ending.

Comprised of 218,000 words, you’ll have plenty to read for the foreseeable future. This is a book to have on your night table, to sample a story each night before extinguishing the lights and drifting off to a restful sleep.

~GUEST POST~

Hello, my name is Andrew Joyce. I have a new book out entitled Bedtime Stories for Grown-Ups. It came about because my editor hounded me for two years to put all my short stories into one collection. Actually, it was supposed to be a two-volume set because there was so much material. I fended her off for as long as possible. I didn’t want to do the work of editing all the stories. There were a lot them. But she finally wore me down. Instead of two volumes, I put all the stories into a single book because I wanted to get the whole thing over with. I had other books to write.

Bedtime Stories is made up of fiction and nonfiction stories and some of ’em are about my criminal youth. I must tell you, I never thought any of these stories would see the light of day. I wrote them for myself and then forgot about them. By the way, there are all sort of genres within its pages, from westerns to detective stories to love stories and just about anything else that you can imagine.

There are a whole lotta stories in the book—700 pages worth. Enough to keep you reading for the foreseeable future.

~EXCERPT~

Granny

This tale is mostly true.
My great-grandmother crossed the Great Plains in a covered wagon … going to the promised land of California. The year was 1866. She left St. Louis, Missouri, eight months after the end of the Civil War.
Her name was Rebecca Joyce. Her husband, Michael, drove the wagon as Rebecca walked alongside. Then they would switch, and Michael would walk and Rebecca would drive the team. They could not afford the extra weight of even one person. The wagon carried all the things needed to start a new life. Rebecca walked a thousand miles of their two-thousand-mile trek.
I know this because my family still has her diary. It recounts the harrowing journey across an unexplored land.
One hundred and sixty-six men, women, and children left on that fateful journey. One hundred and fifteen lived to see California—fifty-one souls did not.
Forty-two days after leaving Missouri, Rebecca reloaded her husband’s long gun as he fought off Indians from under their wagon. Twelve people were killed in that encounter. When they crossed the Green River, six of their party drowned. On the high plains, cholera hit; thirty-three died over a two-day period.
I tell you of these things for a reason. You younger folks of today have it easy, but still you complain. Well, what do you think of this? Rebecca crossed a continent—an untamed continent—with just an iPhone 1 and only 2G service! And no video camera! Can you imagine the hardship? Can you picture what that poor woman had to go through to keep up with the goings-on of the Kardashian clan and what was trending on Twitter? The horror!
The next time your phone takes all of 0.0002 seconds to connect to Facebook and you think that’s an eternity, please remember Rebecca Doyle fighting off disease and Indians and—worse still—being in the dark on the latest news concerning Kim’s butt.

Review: The Last Good Day of the Year by Jessica Warman

20613800Release date: May 19th 2015
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

A new powerful thriller from the globally-embraced author of Between.

Ten years ago, in the early hours of New Year’s Day, seven-year-old Samantha and her next door neighbor, Remy, watched as a man broke into Sam’s home and took her younger sister, Turtle, from her sleeping bag. Remy and Sam, too afraid to intervene at the time, later identified the man as Sam’s sister Gretchen’s much older ex-boyfriend, Steven, who was sent to prison for Turtle’s murder.

Now, Sam’s shattered family is returning to her childhood home in an effort to heal. As long-buried memories begin to surface, Sam wonders if she and Remy accurately registered everything they saw. The more they re-examine the events of that fateful night, the more questions they discover about what really happened to Turtle.

Master storyteller Jessica Warman keeps readers guessing in this arresting page-turner.

One of the main reasons why I don't like reading synopsis' beforehand is because it tends to leave me with big expectations. That was the case for this book, and I went in thinking I was getting a lot more than what was delivered. The Last Good Day of they Year certainly has great writing and an interesting storyline, but I feel like it didn't hit the mark for me and I didn't get the "powerful thriller" aspect that was promised.

It took me a long time to finish reading the book because I had a hard time after the first few chapters and I couldn't connect with the characters. And even though I understand why the author gave so much backstory surrounding the tragedy, I still felt overwhelmed whenever she'd take us in the past or bring up segments from ---(I forgot the name of the man) his book.

I guess my main issue with the story is that I wanted to feel more for the characters, in particularly Sam, especially since this book is based on such a horrific event. I wanted to feel their emotions and invest more in the story, but I couldn't. Sadly, I was more focused on finding out who the real killer was and just finishing it.
Like I said, the author is a great writer; her words flowed perfectly. But the story itself kind of fell short on the mystery aspect, and when the real murderer is unveiled, there wasn't a lot of momentum towards it. It felt a bit rushed actually, compared to the pace of the rest of the book.

Overall, it's an okay read. If you don't mind backstories, details, a subtle mystery with family drama, do give this one a try.

Secrets. Lies. Deception. For the past six years, Samantha Hunt has lived with the belief that the untimely death of her parents was the result of an unfortunate accident—that by the cruel hand of fate, she had been left an orphan. But it was a lie, a terrible lie told to her by those who wanted to keep her in the dark. And the truth... when revealed, will change her life and haunt her forever.

*Received ecopy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Mystery Falls was quite a pleasant surprise. I actually expected the book to be action packed and would have a ton of paranormal theatrics but it was far from it. What I got was a romantic and mysterious story driven by one girl's determination to find the truth, about her life and the guy she loved. And I enjoyed it.

Overall, it was well-written; interesting from start to finish. I liked how elaborate the details were in describing the setting and establishing each character. Samantha was a likable protagonist and I kept rooting for her throughout. I sympathized with her, losing her parents and having to go through her cousin's crap on a daily basis. Thankfully, she had a cool best friend to keep her happy. On a side note, Mia at times turned me off. She could be somewhat pushy and beyond nosy when it came to Samantha and her feelings for Shadow. It was obvious she had her best friend's happiness at heart, but jeez, her pushy mentality was hard for me to tolerate in the majority of the book. So, I was glad when her hands got busy helping Samantha try to unravel the mystery surrounding her parents' supposedly car accident.

That's another thing: the suspense. It was good when the story switched from the romance aspect and onto more serious issues like the death of Samantha's parents. I'm glad Marilyn wrote it that way, because while I enjoyed the intense attraction between the main characters and was curious as to why Shadow was even bothering with Claire when he obviously had feelings for Samantha really baffled me, so it was nice to see how it all turned out. Everything was pretty much wrapped up smoothly.

Like I said before, Mystery Falls was well-written and intriguing. I don't think I've read a book involving angels in a while now so this was a fresh read. I really liked how the story ended as well and cannot wait to get into the second book. If you enjoy young adult romance novels with paranormal and suspenseful elements then you'll certainly like Mystery Falls
