Synopsis via Goodreads:
Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she’s there.
What Ellie doesn't anticipate is Graham’s infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect something powerful and ancient to awaken in her and that strange whispers would urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, there’s suddenly a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.
Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly-epic coming of age.

~My Review~

Paulson's debut enlightens lovers of young adult fiction by bringing forth a story about self-discovery among other rudiments surrounding mythical beings.

Valkyrie Rising has an intriguing plot. I liked the actual story and how descriptive it was. I felt as if I was learning more in every chapter. Also, the fact that everything, with the exception of the beginning, takes place in a foreign land like Norway was really interesting and I always enjoy reading novels set outside of the States.

The novel is written from the point of view of a girl experiencing internal as well as life changes. Don't want to give anything away so I'll just say that Ellie's a likable main character. Her personality reflects a bit of my own so I could relate with her. It was fascinating to read about Ellie's growing and intense feelings for Tuck and I was kept interested in their relationship and wanted to see how it would evolve. Speaking of Tuck, I admire his respect and friendship with Graham, as well as both guys' protective nature when it came to Ellie.

I also have to admit that the initial mystery about the kidnapping pulled me in, and I liked the dramatic scenes whenever danger would unfold. But to be honest I felt that the pacing was a bit slow and not much action took place. However, Ingrid made up for that with her awesome writing and a great ending.

So, overall Valkyrie Rising was a good read with some great characters and a wonderful storyline. I definitely can't wait to read the continuation to this one.
