#FearlessWomen Tour ~ Starless by Jacqueline Carey

Release date: June 12th 2018
Publisher: Tor Books
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Jacqueline Carey is back with an amazing adventure not seen since her New York Times bestselling Kushiel's Legacy series. Lush and sensual, Starless introduces us to an epic world where exiled gods live among us, and a hero whose journey will resonate long after the last page is turned.

I was nine years old the first time I tried to kill a man...

Destined from birth to serve as protector of the princess Zariya, Khai is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert; yet there is one profound truth that has been withheld from him.

In the court of the Sun-Blessed, Khai must learn to navigate deadly intrigue and his own conflicted identity…but in the far reaches of the western seas, the dark god Miasmus is rising, intent on nothing less than wholesale destruction.

If Khai is to keep his soul’s twin Zariya alive, their only hope lies with an unlikely crew of prophecy-seekers on a journey that will take them farther beneath the starless skies than anyone can imagine.

~EXCERPT~

I glanced at Zariya and saw her flushed with anger and embarrassment, and suddenly I was angry, too; anger rising in me like Pahrkun’s wind. I looked for the spaces between that existed in this bickering exchange and drove words into them like a blade. “I do not answer to you, Your Majesties,” I said to both Adinah and Sanala in the coldest voice I could muster. “Not in this or any matter. I do not answer to anyone save Pahrkun the Scouring Wind.”

For the first time since I’d caught sight of Merabaht, I was not the one gaping.
“You dare!” Queen Adinah recovered first, striding forward to strike at my face with an open palm. I angled away from the blow, causing her to stumble. She drew in an outraged breath. “Guards!”
Captain Tarshim stepped forward, signaling to the others. As their gilded spears leveled at me, I braced myself and tried to gauge whether I could take out all four without bloodshed.
“No!” It was Sister Nizara who countermanded them in a forceful tone. “Mother, Anamuht is displeased with the House of the Ageless.  Will you worsen matters by incurring the outright wrath of the Sacred Twins?”
The guards stood down and I breathed more easily.
Queen Adinah summoned her dignity with an effort. “Because you are young and ignorant, I will forgive the offense you have given me today,” she said to me. “And I will tell you to choose wisely before you make enemies at court.”
I inclined my head to her.
She beckoned to a maidservant. “I will retire to my chambers for the midday rest.”
Following her lead, the others dispersed save for Sister Nizara, whom I saluted. “Thank you, Elder Sister.”
She frowned. “My mother is in the wrong, but there is merit to her advice . . .  Zariya, are you laughing?”
“No, sister,” Zariya said in a choked voice, her shoulders shaking. “I am trying very hard not to.”

#FearlessWomenTour ~ By Fire Above by Robyn Bennis

Series: Signal Airship #2
Release date: May 15th 2018
Publisher: Tor Books
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis:

By Fire Above is the rip-roaring new adventure in Robyn Bennis's Signal Airship military fantasy series that Patricia Briggs hails as “full of sass and terrific characters.”

"All's fair in love and war," according to airship captain Josette Dupre, until her hometown of Durum becomes occupied by the enemy and her mother a prisoner of war. Then it becomes, "Nothing's fair except bombing those Vins to high hell."

Before she can rescue her town, however, Josette must maneuver her way through the nest of overstuffed vipers that make up Garnia's military and royal leaders in order to drum up support. The foppish and mostly tolerated Mistral crew member Lord Bernat steps in to advise her, along with his very attractive older brother.

Between noble scheming, under-trained recruits, and supply shortages, Josette and the crew of the Mistral figure out a way to return to Durum—only to discover that when the homefront turns into the frontlines, things are more dangerous than they seem.

~EXCERPT~

Mistral still fell. There was nothing left to drop but the bref guns and the water ballast, and Josette wanted to reserve water ballast for landing. So she had hatchets distributed, and together with the deck crew hacked away the lines and supports holding the cannons, letting them fall, with the dearest hope that they’d land on someone soft.
With that dismal task finished, she called landing stations and had Jutes hand out knives. When Bernat took his, he blinked at it a few times and said, “Oh, thank you.”
“If you end up inside a bag after we’ve landed,” Josette said, “use that to cut your way out. Don’t tarry, or you’ll drown in the gas.”
He looked at her in disbelief, and then suddenly cried, “Why in hell do I come aboard this deathtrap?”
She smirked and looked forward. “Same reason as the rest of us do: irredeemable insanity.”

Review: Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Release Date: April 24th 2018
Publisher: Wednesday Books
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother's betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

*Publisher approved request via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Such a great story. From the characters to the different tribes, this world of war, family, loyalty, and adventure had me invested from beginning to end.

I must start out by saying Eelyn is quite a strong young woman, and her strength was depicted not only when it came to fighting next to her father and other men in her village, but it's also her willpower and sheer determination to survive in the enemy's camp and make it home. Yes, she could be rash at times and put herself and others at risk, but Eelyn was true to her heart and would make that leap without hesitation, something not many could do. I actually liked how fearless she was, some may find her impulsive but in those situations, her reaction was understandable. And although she went through hell at the beginning of being captured, it was interesting how she eased up toward Fiske's family and their way of life. Eelyn is definitely a warrior to the core, but she also showed a softer, vulnerable side to Fiske's little brother and in time towards him and his family. But honestly, if she remained pissed at her brother for the entire story, I'd be okay with that too. In spite of the fact that she also felt guilty about what happened to him and how he ended up with the Riki people.

The relationship between Eelyn and Fiske was a growing one, and there was a lot of tension to break through before their defenses started to fizzle away. But I loved that. The story moved at a steady pace and there was never a lagging moment, but with those two, it slowed down a bit, as if to give them time to allow their true emotions to come forth. And I liked the choices they made at the end because with both being from opposite clans that have warred for centuries, I was concerned with how things would turn out and if they'd give their hearts this freedom to love no matter what.

There's not much else I could say without giving too much away, other than the fact that it was interesting seeing how a mutual enemy could finally unite two warring clans and potentially put an end to a belief, which was crazy to think that people would fight based on something like that anyway. I mean, the fact that they had children learning how to kill and sending them out to war at the age of twelve was truly scary. I doubt I could survive in such a situation. But although I hate wars and people fighting for power or just because they happen to come from different villages, I must say I do like that women are treated equally and are trained and placed at the forefront to fight alongside the men. And this story proves that women can be just as tough and heroic, and not only love and hold the family down. So kudos to Adrienne for delivering such a fantastic and well-written story and I look forward to her next work.

Review & Giveaway: Blood and Sand by C.V. Wyk

Series: Blood and Sand #1
Release date: January 16th 2018
Publisher: Tor Teen
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

FORGED IN BATTLE...
FROM THE DUST OF THE ARENA...
A LEGEND WILL RISE

The action-packed tale of a 17-year-old warrior princess and a handsome gladiator who dared to take on the Roman Republic―and gave rise to the legend of Spartacus...

For teens who love strong female protagonists in their fantasy and historical fiction, Blood and Sand is a stirring, yet poignant tale of two slaves who dared take on an empire by talented debut author C. V. Wyk.

Roma Victrix. The Republic of Rome is on a relentless march to create an empire―an empire built on the backs of the conquered, brought back to Rome as slaves.

Attia was once destined to rule as the queen and swordmaiden of Thrace, the greatest warrior kingdom the world had seen since Sparta. Now she is a slave, given to Xanthus, the Champion of Rome, as a sign of his master’s favor. Enslaved as a child, Xanthus is the preeminent gladiator of his generation.

Against all odds, Attia and Xanthus form a tentative bond. A bond that will spark a rebellion. A rebellion that threatens to bring the Roman Republic to its end―and gives rise to the legend of Spartacus...

The story continues in Fire and Ash, coming in 2019 from Tor Teen.

*Received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

After spotting Blood and Sand on Goodreads, I knew I just had to read it. While I haven't watched or read anything regarding Spartacus or Gladiators before, I do love female protagonists that are strong and more than capable of saving themselves when it comes down to it. And in the case of warrior princess Attia, she had all this and more, plus she was able to become vulnerable and compassionate beyond the tough exterior.

I loved the two main characters from start. Both Attia and Xanthus had endured so much in their past and it made them real and even more interesting. It was also wonderful to see how much their adversity motivated them to rise to the top and face things head on and that more than anything else drew them closer and became a beautiful bond in the wake of all the chaos.

Romance aside, the overall setting and historical aspect of the story was magnificently executed and I applaud the author for her superb writing and the way in which she kept the novel so intriguing. From the fight scenes to the atmosphere outside of the arena, every moment was important and not once did the story feel dull or draggy. I enjoyed every bit of this thrilling tale and I cannot wait to read the second book.

Speaking of follow-ups, the ending really broke me and left me with questions, and I'm nervous about what will happen next for each surviving character. I'm looking forward to finding out where their paths will lead and if Attia and Xanthus will have a happy ending once the people responsible for their suffering falls.

In conclusion, Blood and Sand is quite a thrilling adventure that pulls you into the lives of two determined individuals fighting for love and justice in a time of brutality. I highly recommend reading this fantastic story.

By happenstance, a fifty-nine-year-old Huck Finn and his lady friend, Molly Lee, are on hand, but they are not interested in gold. They have come to that neck of the woods seeking adventure.

It is into this world that Huck and Molly race.

They cannot stop. They cannot turn back. They can only go on. Lives hang in the balance—including theirs.

My name is Andrew Joyce and I write books for a living. Shane has been kind enough to allow me a little space on her blog to promote my new novel RESOLUTION: Huck Finn’s Greatest Adventure. I think it’s a good book, but what do I know?

I’m kinda shy about tooting my own horn. So I think I’ll tell you a little story instead—a story about Chuck the Wonder Dog. Everything in it is true. I hope you enjoy it.

Chuck rooms with my friend Jeff. Now Jeff is a good enough guy, but we have different outlooks on dogs. Jeff thinks dogs should be well trained while I take a more lackadaisical approach to dog training. Actually, after ten years of being with my dog, Danny, I’m pretty well trained. Anyway, when Chuck and Jeff first got together, Chuck was just a puppy and Jeff started right in on the training. Once the basics were covered, he began teaching Chuck to count. Yeah I know, but Jeff is a boat captain and he has plenty of time on his hands when he’s not at sea.

The way he did it was to hold up one finger and get Chuck to bark once. When Chuck got the one finger-one bark down, Jeff went to two fingers and so on until Chuck would bark ten times when Jeff held up ten fingers. And, unless Jeff was going to take off his shoes—and even Jeff ain't that anal—that was as high as Chuck could count.

So now, Chuck will bark the requisite number of times for the number of fingers held before him. Eight, six, four or whatever, got the picture? Then Jeff started in on teaching Chuck how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. No fooling! I don’t know how he did it; I think all the credit should go to Chuck for being so smart. But in the end, Jeff could hold up, for instance, two fingers and say, “Two plus three,” then hold up three fingers and Chuck would bark five times. Or Jeff would show Chuck seven fingers and say, “Seven minus three.” then hold up three fingers and Chuck would bark four times. You see, Chuck had been taught to recognize the words “minus,” “add,” and so forth. He could do any combination of numbers up to ten.

Now we come to the kicker. As I said, Jeff is a boat captain and he hangs around the docks with the other captains. And if you know anything about boat captains, you know they are a languid breed. So while these lay-abouts hung out at the local bar, Jeff would entertain them with Chuck’s math skills. They were all duly impressed—all, that is, except one guy.

One fine day this guy sees Jeff on the dock and goes up to him and says “I’ll bet you I can give Chuck a math problem that he can’t figure out.” And Jeff replies, “As long as it doesn’t involve a number higher that ten, Chuck can handle it.” Consequently they bet a case of beer.

Now picture this: The guy is down on one knee facing Chuck. Jeff is standing behind the guy. The guy looks right at Chuck and says, “What is the square root of nine?” Chuck looks up over the guy’s shoulder at Jeff and Jeff holds up three fingers. Of course, Chuck barks three times. The guy turns around real quick, but not quickly enough. Jeff is standing there with his hands in his pockets, looking innocent. The guy scratched his head and headed out to buy a case of beer.

Like I said above, it’s a true story. I have seen Chuck in action. It’s amazing!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot—please go out and buy my book and make an old man happy.

Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis via Goodreads:
A modern day thrill ride, where a teen girl and her animal companion must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother's life—and her own.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place?

*Received ARC from publisher in exchange of an honest review.

Adventurous, a good sense of comradery, need to survive, along with the element of romance and a representation of value and what an individual will do for their loved ones. There was quite a lot going on in this thrilling story. I felt intrigued from the opening chapter until Tella started this nail-biting, hazardous race to find a "cure." I must admit, I haven't read Victoria Scott's Dante Walker books, much less any other novel written by her, but I can say that I liked this one and glad it's my first. Her writing is witty, fast-paced, and not clustered at all. If this is how her other novels are then I'm a fan.

What I enjoyed most about Fire & Flood is how the story wasn't just about Tella choosing to participate in an event to save her brother, but it also focused on other characters and what they're in the race for. I liked how they sort of created this unit to help each other until the end. Not many would do such a thing if they were in a situation like that and it really makes you wonder what you would've done when you read about the inhumane things that takes place. Of course, no story is quite complete without the aspect of romance in the pages. And the feelings between Tella and Guy (not a fan of the name) were nice to read about while they blossomed along the way. I like that it wasn't plastered all over the pages or took away from the main purpose of the story, which in fact is the race and reaching the end.

Speaking of Guy, I was a tad confused by his behavior at first but then I got him, and once he started to open up and share what was really going on with Tella his position in the race seemed much bigger than just winning. I adore his strength and determination, along with Tella's. Whenever she was at a point where she felt like giving up, she reminds herself of the reason why she's in that situation to begin with and that motivates her to keep going. Another big thing about the story that I loved was her relationship with her Pandora, Madox. She treated him with respect and showed him love, while some took advantage of theirs in shameful ways. All I can say is, if you're with Peta or you're love for animals makes you faint at heart when reading about them being treated cruelly, then you should be warned before picking this up. It might affect you on an emotional level. It did that for me.

What else? Twists. There were a few that had me surprised. Like the whole deal with Dink and Caroline. And I must say I was a tad surprised by Harper's decision towards the end of the book even though she portrayed tough characteristics throughout the story. There were other moments where I received an eye-opening of how terrible the race truly is and just how life-threatening. I think I came to the realization at the same time as Tella. That's how much I could relate with her character and experience every moment with her.

For some reason though, while reading the book I kept thinking of Digimon adventures and related it in some ways to the characters and their Pandoras. I don't know why, maybe it's cause I used to watch that cartoon. Anyways, it's not a big deal just me and my silly brain.

To conclude, I don't know how else to say Fire & Flood was terrific. I really, really enjoyed the story and cannot wait for the second book because I'd love to get more of Tella and Guy's sweet love in the wet jungle or hot desert, and I'm looking forward to them reaching the end and seeing what decision they will make. Because after all, the cure is only meant for one winner.
