*Author provided ecopy in exchange for an honest review.

In spite of my frustration with the two characters in the first book, I truly loved Rikki (see review) and was super elated when Abigail Strom gifted me a copy of the sequel. I don't remember Claire or Will from the previous book, but I did end up finding their story just as interesting if not as FRUSTRATING as well, and it felt like I was just introduced to their characters so I was able to develop a fresh understanding of who they were.

Again, Claire is as infuriating as Rikki, it's pretty much just another set of two complicated individuals denying their strong feelings and trying hard to convince themselves that they should lay off relationships and focus on their future. That's good and all, but when you feel that intensely for each other, there should be no reason to wait. No time is better than the present.

In regards to how I feel about the characters, I did like them, but wasn't as connected as I was with Rikki and Sam. Claire came off as a headstrong girl and I liked that about her, but often times she'd contradict herself. Like how she came up with this silly idea about not dating when she knew very well she wanted to be with Will. And she even asked for something ridiculous as wanting to meet any girl he decided to date. Like why put yourself through that torture? Another thing that frustrated me about her was a slight bit of selfishness on her part. For instance, when Will went through a difficult situation, she was all concerned about him not talking to her above anyone else, when the guy was already having a rough time trying to figure out his next step. It was still nice of her to take it upon herself to give him an "intervention" when times got tough, but sometimes I just couldn't figure her out.

As for Will, I liked him. But in a way I wanted more from his character. It's almost like there wasn't enough of him whenever it was his POV, like I wanted to be in his head space more and try to connect deeper. Still, he was a good guy that had dealt a terrible blow and I'l love to see what happens with his future, should he make a reappearance in the third book.

Overall, an enjoyable story with complex characters that in a sense reflect new adults in college. I can relate to some things, and I'm sure other readers will if they give this series a chance. Looking forward to the next book, Abigail!

Review: Rikki (Hart University #1) by Abigail Strom

Series: Hart University #1
Release date: September 22nd 2015
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Ever since junior high and an ill-fated game of seven minutes in heaven, Rikki Eisendrath and Sam Payne have hated each others’ guts. But when they end up at the same college—and the same dorm—they figure it’s time to declare a truce.

They even become friends… sort of. But when Sam asks Rikki to model for his sculpting project, they start spending more time together—and her feelings for him get more complicated.

She tries to focus on the guy she’s been crushing on instead. But Sam’s the one she can’t stop thinking about, even though their arguments are starting to heat up as much as the chemistry between them.

With antagonism and attraction this intense, there’s bound to be an explosion. But when the dust settles, will Sam and Rikki be enemies, friends… or something more?

*Request was approved via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this story. I loved how it played with my emotions and had me really invested in the characters, in spite of how frustrated they made me. Rikki and Sam had so much angst between them that it gave me the fireworks. They spent years oblivious and completely misunderstanding each other, and throughout the book I just wanted to shake some senses into them. There were moments that made me laugh, and there were moments that made me want to cry. Yeah, like I said, the emotions were definitely there.

I connected with Rikki in the sense that she liked holding on to control. I understood her character and felt like she was as realistic as an eighteen year old trying to figure out her life gets. I liked the family she came from, and I admired her determination and her drive to focus on her education and excel at everything. She was very intellectual, and I think the greatest thing about the story is that Rikki and Sam connected based on something they had in common: they were both very smart and always performed at their utmost best. And I loved that there wasn't an insta-love or constant gushing over one's appearance, but they were attracted to each other's minds. Their relationship wasn't the best at start, but after several years of competing in academics and misunderstanding their feelings for each other, I was happy when they realized there was no hate and decided to be friends in college. I felt like had they not done that, then they wouldn't have been able to spend more time learning about each other and developing clarity about their true feelings.

Sam was such a good person. He wasn't the typical model-like guy found in most YA books, and he wasn't a star athlete, but he was sort of a nerd with great qualities and the type of guy I swooned over because he was cute in his own way. He had to deal with loss and some other issues in his family, and it was so sad how he liked Rikki in secret all that time but believed she wasn't interested in him because of her silly crushing on the supposedly good-looking guys in school. It was funny how in the end, they both admitted to thinking the other wasn't interested and hence thought it was best to start pining over someone else. But their feelings were so strong that trying to be with someone else never worked out for either of them.

Gosh, there's so much I could go on about but I don't want to spoil it too much for anyone who hasn't read the story. All I can say is that you'll definitely feel like plucking your lashes out over the relationship between Rikki and Sam, and your emotions will be scattered from beginning to end. These characters didn't only go through high school completely oblivious and often in denial about each other, it continued to university. So you can only imagine how much their craziness will frustrate readers. Aside from the constant back and forth, there were juicy moments and some humor thrown in the mix to keep things interesting. The writing is great, and the pacing is quick. Not necessarily light, but this book will indeed make you feel things. I highly recommend.

Review: Before We Were Strangers by Renée Carlino

Release date: August 18th 2015
Publisher: Atria
Purchase: Amazon | B&N

Synopsis via Goodreads:
From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a love story about a Craigslist “missed connection” post that gives two people a second chance at love fifteen years after they were separated in New York City.

To the Green-eyed Lovebird:

We met fifteen years ago, almost to the day, when I moved my stuff into the NYU dorm room next to yours at Senior House.

You called us fast friends. I like to think it was more.

We lived on nothing but the excitement of finding ourselves through music (you were obsessed with Jeff Buckley), photography (I couldn’t stop taking pictures of you), hanging out in Washington Square Park, and all the weird things we did to make money. I learned more about myself that year than any other.

Yet, somehow, it all fell apart. We lost touch the summer after graduation when I went to South America to work for National Geographic. When I came back, you were gone. A part of me still wonders if I pushed you too hard after the wedding…

I didn’t see you again until a month ago. It was a Wednesday. You were rocking back on your heels, balancing on that thick yellow line that runs along the subway platform, waiting for the F train. I didn’t know it was you until it was too late, and then you were gone. Again. You said my name; I saw it on your lips. I tried to will the train to stop, just so I could say hello.

After seeing you, all of the youthful feelings and memories came flooding back to me, and now I’ve spent the better part of a month wondering what your life is like. I might be totally out of my mind, but would you like to get a drink with me and catch up on the last decade and a half?

Before We Were Strangers completely blew me away. I wasn't expecting what Renee had in store for me, and let me tell you, that blurb barely sums up how crazy this story is. Like I'm seriously struggling to put my thoughts together to explain just how much I enjoyed Matt and Grace's tumultuous journey--from their funny first encounter to the moment when they finally reunited. I connected right off with these two. I felt their joy, their sorrow, and their love. Every page felt real. The characters felt real, and their emotions felt real. I simply can't get enough of them and I'm beyond happy with the way things worked out, even if so much time had passed where they were separated.

I loved going back to their time in college and learning about Matt and Grace. They were both from different backgrounds, but drawn together through art and something else. Something intense and true. They began as friends and that blossomed into so much more. It's funny how they were so in love with each other before even realizing it, and once their feelings were clear it was definitely hard to deny.
I hated the circumstances and the misunderstandings that caused their separation, and at times I was mad at them too. There were moments where maybe they should have fought harder for each other and not just give in. I mean, their love was so strong that even after fifteen years, they still couldn't move on. I had predicted a little about what happened to Grace, and it sucks that Matt missed out on that and wasn't there for her during that particular time. And even though it's not their fault and someone horrible fueled the problem, I felt that Grace could've tried to speak to Matt face-to-face, regardless of what she was led to believe because she was following his career and had an idea of what he was doing, while Matt had no clue whatsoever as to how to find her. But hey, their love wasn't perfect and it didn't work out immediately for them. And it's sad that all that happened to a couple who wanted to be together so badly, but life is crazy and some things happen for reason, especially since both got to live out their dreams and experience a world apart for a while. No matter how long.

Aside from the awesome characters and storytelling, Carlino did a great job bringing New York city to life in both time period. Her words sucked me in fast and I couldn't stop reading. I literally had to force myself to put down my kindle and go to sleep. The story is just that good. And like I said, the characters are fleshed out wonderfully. Everything about them felt real and their relationship was easy to root for. I also loved LOVED the ending. It had me smiling and tearing up with excitement. Gosh. I have to stop here before I give too much away. This is my second Carlino novel and I'm so happy to have discovered her because she's a terrific writer that knows how to tug at the heart. I highly recommend this one!

Review: All Lined Up by Cora Carmack

18505845Series: Rusk University #1
Release date: May 13th 2014
Publisher: William Morrow
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

*Purchased ebook on Amazon

This was a fast-paced story that I truly enjoyed. With a few minor details that bugged me about the female protagonist, the experience was great for me and I'm glad I finally picked up a story written by Carmack.

All Lined Up really delivered a realistic portrayal of college kids trying to figure out their lives. I liked that the story's told in alternating POVs so that readers can get inside the head of both Dallas and Carson. Let's start with the latter because I really liked him and had no issues with him at all. Carson was...how to say it....a sweetheart. I liked how supportive, hard-working, and ambitious he was. He knew what he wanted and he went for it. I liked the fact that as much as he had feelings for Dallas, initially he was willing to suppress that for her sake and for trying to stay focus on his goal. And when their feelings for each other proved to be too strong to fight, it was wonderful seeing how much he wanted to make things work while trying to make her feel comfortable with however she wanted the relationship to be. Carson really catered to Dallas' needs throughout the story and he was impeccably lovable. This is the kind of boyfriend girls should have.

Where Dallas is concerned, I liked her somewhat, but at times I was kind of mad at her because she could be hardheaded and dramatic in her reactions to certain things. While her feelings were understandable in some aspect, being that she's the daughter of a stern college football coach and half the team wanted to hook up with her, there were times I felt like she was too angry at the world and needed to sort out her emotions. Thankfully for Carson, her shield began to crack and she started to open up and realize that she needed to figure things out and not be so enraged about stuff not working out and being held back. Cause really, it only takes her being a bit more driven in going after her dreams and not allowing her father to dictate (even though he has her best interest at heart.)

Speaking of Dallas' father, he was a good character. A great coach too, and as much as Dallas goes on about him, I didn't get the sense that he was as fearful as she made him out to be. He seemed like a nice enough man and he wasn't even too hard on Carson, even when he found out about their relationship.

Other characters I liked were Stella (love the inclusion of diversity because it adds variety). She was a cool, fun friend. Just hated that she wanted to hook up with a slime like Silas even though he wanted to hook up with Dallas. Well, whatever, that's her I guess. And oh, I liked Carson's friend, Ryan. I wish we got a lot more of him in the story and hopefully he'll be included a lot more, as in play out an interesting story surrounding him in the next installment.

Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I liked that this is a series and we get to experience more of this exciting college life of two interesting characters. Definitely going to stick with it to discover how their lives take off from here on out.
